Millennial Money: Living On $158K A Year In Grand Rapids, MI

Destiny Adams, 29, earns $158,000 per year as a child well-fair specialist in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A large portion of her income also comes from her business, Destite Hair Collection, a wig and hair extension company and salon.

She attended a local college where she met girls from Detroit that had hair extensions. However, in Grand Rapids, there were not any salons for hair extensions. She decided in 2016 to open her first hair-salon business to serve the community in her hometown.

After graduating from college, she chose to join the military where she took her first personal finance course. Here she learned the importance of investing and saving her money and not giving it out to family members.

Currently, she has $24,000 in her savings account.

“I’ve started setting aside $500 per month and I’ve been doing that for the past six years,” she said.

Se plans on saving most of it for retirement, but she does use some of it for travel. Due to COVID-19, her travel plans have been stopped, but she plans on traveling again once the pandemic is over.
