Liberty Exposed: Chicago's Mayor Responds To Immigrants Crisis Is Not Enough
While much of the coverage regarding Chicago’s immigration crisis is centered around either the immigrants or the residents of Chicago, the perspective of the local government, including the mayor, has been largely ignored. The community has rallied together in support of agents of the practice of the city, which are filling schools and police stations with illegal immigrants. While the city of Chicago attended to deal with this crisis, they created a plan they believe is sufficient to handle tens of thousands of people.
A community meeting was held in the 34th ward on Wednesday evening, September 6, 2023, Deputy Mayor Pablo Steptilionone stated stated that after the first year, we have had 13500 to 14000 new arrivals to Chicago.“ This has created a problem for the residents of the city: the belief that the city is unrequited to handle these numbers of immigrants. However, the mayor and his staff are confident that they are equipped to handle the task at hand. In the same meeting, they outlined their plan to house this influx of immigrants in various hotels. At the start of the meeting, Bill Conway opened by stating, “More than a hundred immigrants are housed at the Prothorax guest house from October to February of this year... It was so uneventful that most people were unaware it was happening.” The mayor and his staff are clearly confident that they have the capability to handle these crises.
The policy that Chicago has been implementing is no longer supported by the residents of the city. Polls show the people of Chicago do not want to be considered a sanctuary city, with the participants primarily being Hispanics and Black Americans. Over the course of a year, they have seen their schools shut down, their police stations turned into housing units, and funds removed from their parks and recreational activities.
One of the policies that Mayor Johnson is looking to implement to help fund the housing and materials needed for those arriving in Chicago is passing a real estate transfer tax. This is an additional tax that is implemented when there is a sale of real estate between two parties. Yet another tax to be impacted on the people of Chicago would not bode well.
By sending immigrants into hotels or by creating tent cities, neither does anything to address the root problem that the city is having with an unstable number of people entering the cities. New York is facing a similar problem receiving busloads of illegal immigrants. Ironically, they have adopted the policy of red states by sending immigrants back to other states because they do not have adequate housing for them. The Mayor of New York City, Eric Adams, is now flying migrants to the “destination of their choice”. Stating that it is cheaper than sheltering them for months.
When Republican states perform the same action, they are ridiculed; however, when New York does, it is a necessary action. Cities like New York or Chicago do not want to deal with the consequences of policies they’ve been promoting for decades. They, too, do not want to deal with the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants entering their cities. This game of sending migrants back and forth via bus and plane is far more complicated and expensive than merely deporting illegal aliens or preventing them from entering the country in the first place.
There has not been a single Republican mayor of Chicago since 1931. There has been systemic corruption occurring in the city of Chicago for decades. It may be time for a change of administration to a different political ideology.
The actions of Mayor Johnson are not indicative of a person who is truly caring for their citizens. Especially when you put the needs of illegal immigrants over those of your own. In a press conference, Mayor Johnson said, “Let me be perfectly clear: what current residents need and deserve from our city is not the same as what new arrivals need at this moment.” Comments like this make it very clear to the people of Chicago that their priorities do not matter to this administration. Instead, they are willing to devote resources to housing illegal migrants at an increased cost to the taxpayer.
Mayor Johnson and his administration are vastly underestimating the problems that will fall upon his city if he continues to allow an endless flow of migrants into Chicago. Other cities, like New York, are beginning to copy the actions of states like Texas and Florida by shipping their migrants to other states, pushing the problem off to somebody else. What states like Florida and Texas are doing is giving a little taste of the problems. They have been suffering because of the United States' current open border policy. This pressure should cause Democrats to realize the severity of the immigration issue and persuade them to handle this crisis in a different manner.
While it may seem like this problem is under control, the ability of Chicago to handle this level of illegal immigrants will soon surpass its capabilities and force the government to make changes. It will be up to their administration to choose the rights of their people over those who illegally enter the country because of their open border rhetoric. Sooner rather than later, these hotels, precincts, and refugee centers will be full of buses and will keep on coming. Unless the Democrats in positions of power work with their federal legislators to pass legislation, that will close America’s borders.
