Firing Line: Garry Kasparov

Garry Kasparov, a Russian chess grandmaster and a pro-democracy advocate, talks about Putin’s dictatorship and America’s democracy.

Kasparov currently lives in America due to being exiled from Russia in 2013. He believes that returning to Russia would be a dangerous idea.

“There’s so many of my friends and colleagues who march with me on peaceful rallies; almost all of them are in exile, in jail, worse” (1:56)

A massive problem he sees that is happening is that the rest of the free world view Putin as a legitimate leader. He believes that it is a good start that Biden called him a killer, but then he scheduled a summit with Putin.

“That’s how dictators reinstate their legitimacy,” he said in regard to the Summit meeting (4:19).

In America, he says that there is a possibility of threat to democracy. He brings up Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY) and how she was punished for speaking out against Trump and the Capital Riots. For democracy to survive around the world, America must be the leader of it.

“If America walks away, you know, you have Xi Jinping, you have Putin, you have other terrorists and such coming in.”
