Firing Line: Jaime Herrera Beutler

Republican Congresswoman Jamie Herrera Beutler voted to impeach Former President Donald Trump in the impeachment trial. She did not regret her decision and believed that it was the right thing to do.

“It was the decision that was most akin to things that I believed as a Republican,” she said.

She said that the president is sworn into office to defend the Constitution. However, Trump helped to incite the riots, and this lead to a direct assault on the constitution.

She said that as the riots were happening, Trump asked Senators to delay the vote count and criticized Pence as he was fleeing to a secure location.

“The President’s first message basically was a wink and a nod to those protestors. He said, ‘we love you and you’re special,” she said

As multiple Republicans still object to the election results, she called for unity in the party. She said that the Republican Party is still the party of the Constitution.

She called them to be united under values such as individual liberty, pursuit of life, and right for a person to raise his or her family under what he or she believes is right.

“Are we going to be a united Republican majority that adheres to the values that are set out on the constitution?” she said.

She had experienced backlash due to her decision to vote for impeachment. A lot of people from her own team have criticized her. She anticipates that a primary opponent will challenge her in the next election.

Despite everything that has happened in the riots, she praised Congress for showing the strength of democracy. All the Congresspeople and Former Vice President Mike Pence went back to finish voting on solidifying the electoral votes.

“We got back out there, and we voted to seat the electors, and the Constitution moves on,” she said.
